🚨 OpenAI's Latest Breakthrough & iPhone 16 Update!

Read time: under 5 minutes

Welcome back, Cubs! 🐻

Today, I'm sharing two thrilling updates:

  • Breaking News: OpenAI has just released a groundbreaking new series of reasoning models, designed to tackle even the toughest problems - and it's barely 3 hours old!

  • Apple Ecosystem Alert: I'm excited about the upcoming AI-powered features on the highly anticipated iPhone 16!

Let's take a closer look at these game-changing advancements!

Understanding OpenAI’s Latest Innovations: o1 and o1-mini

Today, OpenAI launched its highly anticipated 'strawberry' series of AI models, marking an exciting development in artificial intelligence. These new models, named o1 and o1-mini, bring enhanced reasoning capabilities, promising to tackle complex tasks and solve more challenging problems in fields like science, coding, and math.

For instance, while GPT-4o managed to solve 13% of problems in a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, the new reasoning model achieved an impressive 83%. Its performance extends to subjects such as physics, biology, and chemistry, rivaling that of a PhD student.

However, there are a few trade-offs. The new models are reported to be slower in processing responses compared to their predecessors and lack some features present in GPT-4o, including web browsing and file uploads.

Whom it’s for: These enhanced reasoning capabilities may be particularly useful if you’re tackling complex problems in science, coding, math, and similar fields. For example, o1 can be used by healthcare researchers to annotate cell sequencing data, by physicists to generate complicated mathematical formulas needed for quantum optics, and by developers in all fields to build and execute multi-step workflows.

Availability: ChatGPT Plus and Team users can start exploring these new models today by selecting them from the dropdown menu in ChatGPT.

Apple Unveils AI-Powered iPhone 16: What to Expect

For months, Android users have been enjoying the benefits of AI, leaving iPhone users waiting on the sidelines. But at Tuesday’s highly-anticipated Glowtime event, Apple made it clear that their new AI features for the iPhone 16 are worth the wait.

Here’s what you can look forward to with the AI-powered iPhone 16:

  • Effortlessly generate messages or enhance your writing in any app. Receive summarized notifications, emails, and even meeting notes, all powered by AI.

  • Create custom emojis and images by simply typing in a prompt, offering a new level of personalization.

  • Easily search for specific photos and videos using the advanced AI-powered search function.

  • Meet an upgraded Siri that can now perform complex actions across your settings and apps. For example, you can say, “Send Erica the photos from Saturday’s barbecue” or “Check if mom’s flight is delayed.”

  • Snap a photo of an event flyer or a restaurant, and your iPhone will instantly provide more details. You can also point your camera at a math problem, and the integrated ChatGPT will help you solve it.

And it’s not just the iPhone getting AI enhancements:

  • The new Apple Watch will feature built-in transformers, using advanced machine learning to help detect conditions like sleep apnea.

  • AirPods are stepping up with AI-powered background noise reduction during phone calls, and they can now function as clinical-grade hearing aids.

What else is new? Releasing on September 20, the iPhone 16 Pro will come equipped with a powerful 16-core neural engine to handle AI-heavy tasks, such as real-time advanced color correction or isolating individual voices during audio mixing. The first wave of Apple Intelligence tools will be available in beta next month, with even more features set to roll out throughout the year.

Apple’s AI evolution is here — and it’s just getting started.
