In response to a lawsuit filed last August by a California family whose 16-year-old son died by suicide, alleging ChatGPT had played a harmful role. OpenAI is now rolling out new parental control features for teenage users.

What’s being introduced

• Parents can link their ChatGPT accounts to their teens’ accounts.

• They’ll be able to control how the AI responds, including enabling “age-appropriate model behavior rules.”

• Features like disabling chat history and memory, and notifications when a teen appears to be in “acute distress,” will be available .

Safety enhancements
OpenAI plans to continue partnering with clinicians—psychiatrists, pediatricians, and researchers specializing in adolescent health, eating disorders, and substance use—to better equip the tool to recognize and respond to signs of emotional or mental distress .

Timeline
These features are expected to roll out within the next month to 120 days, depending on the source. OpenAI describes this as the beginning of an ongoing, evolving safety strategy.

1. Switch to “ChatGPT Five Thinking”
This mode makes ChatGPT take more time to reason through its answers, giving you better quality and depth.

2. Customize the personality
Go to Settings → Customize ChatGPT. Pick a style that matches your needs. (I like “Cynic” for fact-checked, no-nonsense answers.)

3. Use custom instructions
Fill out the Custom Instructions box with prompts that guide ChatGPT’s tone and style. Check the weekly prompt at the bottom.

4. Turn on memory
Enable “Reference Saved Memories” and “Reference Chat History” under personalization. ChatGPT will remember your context and bring it into future chats.

5. Add connectors
In the Connectors section, link apps like Gmail, Calendar, or Google Drive. This lets ChatGPT pull real-time info when you use advanced features like agent mode or deep research.
